Square One and Laing Entertainment are delighted to announce the return of Iris DeMent to Australia in 2015. After being absent from our shores for almost 15 years DeMent returned in 2013 to perform 3 sold out shows in Sydney, Melbourne and Meeniyan in regional Victoria.
This time around she will be joined by acclaimed US folk singer Pieta Brown on a tour that includes her very first shows in Adelaide, Newcastle & Brisbane.
Considered “one of the finest artists of her generation”, Iris DeMent has established herself as one of the most beloved and respected writers and singers in American music.
Her debut album ‘Infamous Angel’ was deemed an “essential recording of the 90s” by Rolling Stone and the NY Times said it “distills love, heartbreak, disillusionment and humour in songs that go straight for the heartstrings.” Its 1994 follow-up, ‘My Life’, earned a Grammy nomination in the Contemporary Folk category. 1996’s ‘The Way I Should’ addressed political as well as personal themes and also earned a Grammy nomination. 2004′s ‘Lifeline’ was a collection of traditional gospel songs that she sang as a child growing up in a Pentecostal household. In 2012, she released the critically acclaimed ‘Songs From The Delta’ twelve self-penned compositions that the Boston Globe called “a work of rare, unvarnished grace and power”.
Continually revealing new layers as both a songwriter and performer, Pieta Brown is being recognised as one of modern Americana’s true gems. Her most recent release, ‘Paradise Outlaw’ (Red House Records) was recorded in four days at Bon Iver mastermind Justin Vernon’s Wisconsin studio with a supporting cast that includes Vernon, Amos Lee, Brown’s troubadour father, Greg Brown and more. Pieta has toured North America with Mark Knopfler, and toured with the likes of John Prine, Amos Lee, Brandi Carlisle, JJ Cale, Ani DiFranco, Mavis Staples, and Calexico.
